The most exhilarating and secretive time of the year is almost upon us. The transfer window is known for its antics and last minute signings at least for Tottenham Hotspur. The memories we all have about signing people and speculation are just awesome especially in the case of our signing of Rafael Van Der Vaart. This period is often full of speculation, most commonly for Tottenham whom are linked with every talented player on the planet. This is the time where a ‘fly on the wall’ series would be mostly widely needed for the Spurs fans fed up of relentless links and paper stories.
For us however, it’s our busiest time of the year – apart from match-day, as we compile every inch of speculation for you on Twitter and listen to your views. What Tottenham need this summer is quick signings and hopefully some stellar one’s at that. Big names are what we need to hold onto our best and form a team to challenge for that illustrious contest once again. This blog is compiling everything we believe Spurs need this summer and likely signings at that. It’s quite obvious that we need attacking threat. With Adebayor suffering from second-season syndrome and Jermain having a slump towards the end of the year, we need reinforcements upfront and I believe two forwards will set us up nicely for another top-four battle as well as the addition of a left-back and possibly another midfielder.
Christian Benteke (Aston Villa) – What a memorable season the young Belgian has had. His sheer power and ability to take on opposition both excites and impresses me. Benteke is my number one target for this summer. Because of his age he will be open to progression and the aid of AVB to do so. A player of an older age may not want to develop as much as get their head down and I believe Andre would get the best out of Benteke. His height presence is something Ade does have however Benteke offers more of a goal threat and impressive battling form. He would be very expensive in my opinion as Villa would not want him to leave on the cheap. The only thing that worries me with the likelihood of the transfer is that he is apparently an Arsenal fan; they need a striker and have the financial ability and Champions League status to attract him.
Likelihood of signing: 6/10
Estimated Fee: £16million
Roberto Soldado (Valencia) – Soldado is a player Spurs have got some history with. Last summer we reportedly had a bid turned down for him as well as a rumoured failed bid in January. He has had a very successful season in La Liga and cup games scoring 28 goals, more than his previous amount of 27 the season before. He is clinical, quick and intelligent. He is someone that I would like in attack but I think we need a bigger name to attract top targets also. He has played over 100 times for Valencia and is very loyal however has hinted in the past his desire to play in the Premier League. The Valencia president has also said in recent weeks that a big bid could see Roberto leave. He has achieved 20 goals in his last 4 seasons in Spain and has enjoyed a brief spell at Real Madrid.
Likelihood of signing: 8/10
Estimated Fee: £10million
Leandro Damiao (Internacional) – Well well well. We meet again Damiao. This man has been linked with us for as many windows as I can remember. With a reported deal close in January it seemed inevitable we were never going to sign him however the interest has reignited again. The Brazilian has enjoyed another good start to a season scoring 8 goals in 17 appearances in Brazil’s Campeonato Gaucho. His record for Internacional isn’t all that great with 17 goals his highest ever for the club back in 2011. Damiao represented Brazil at the 2012 Olympic Games however scoring 6 in 5 and displaying his willingness to get on the ball and a keen eye for goal and desire to win. Although there are better and more proven choices out there, Leandro would be an acceptable signing however Spurs fans continue to grow tired of the links.
Likelihood of signing: 5/10
Estimated Fee: £17million
David Villa (Barcelona) – Well what a name we’ve been linked with this time. One of Spain’s all-time leading goal scorers and a La Liga phenomenon being linked with N17. Despite his age, Villa still provides a very clear goal threat. At the ripe old age of 31 Spurs are being linked with a real gem in my opinion. With Barcelona securing Neymar, it looks like Villa’s talents may be sold elsewhere and a cut-price Levy deal could be on the cards with apparent talks being held soon according to reports. Villa has still averaged an astonishing 15 goals in the last season despite an awful leg break. A full season could provide him with an opportunity to score more despite a respectable 9 in La Liga. I would love him at Spurs and a name of his could really lift the fans and act as an attraction for other players. Although Benteke would be a more complete signing, Villa would excite me and arguably the majority of our support. He can also provide cover on the left wing in certain cases.
Likelihood of Signing: 8/10
Estimated Fee: £8million
Jackson Martinez (FC Porto) – Arguably our most ambitious link of the window so far, despite the Hulk rumours, Martinez is a very talented individual with a deadly eye for goal and a top season with Porto finishing with 26 goals – their top scorer. With AVB’s Porto links as well as Martinez’s apparent desire to one day play in England, Spurs could look to get something together to bid for the talented Columbian. He is very tall and provides an aerial threat as do the likes of Benteke and Adebayor. Martinez played in the Champions League thus has experience and could join nicely into a very familiar atmosphere of Portuguese speakers at the Lane. Because of Porto’s status it could be hard to prize him away however.
Likelihood of signing: 5/10
Estimated Fee: £18million
Luke Shaw (Southampton) – The young Southampton star reminds us all of another young and ambitious star we snatched away from the English side. Shaw has enjoyed a very good Premier League season and is part of the promoted side to keep their top-flight status. Shaw is a Chelsea fan however and with the London rivals potentially looking for a left-back with Ashley Cole having just a year left on his contract, they could spring a bid over us after reported interest. Shaw does not have a goal to his name but I have watched him on several occasions and was very impressed with his passing ability, a particularly special chip in an away fixture to Reading springing to mind. We will no doubt face competition for his signature and AVB could look to other targets such as the unlikely Fabio Coentrao of Madrid and Danny Rose to fill the void where Benny could be facing the exit.
Likelihood of signing: 6/10
Estimated Fee: £15million
So all-in-all, some very taleneted indivduals. Although we cannot sign them all I expect us to sign at least two of them and with the added influence of our crazy chariman, there are bound to be some suprises along the way!
