Match Preview – Anzhi Makhachkala (Away)

Tottenham travel to Russia tomorrow to face the big money Anzhi Makhachkala whom have been significantly reduced since the days of their fortunate rise. The match will be played in Moscow’s Saturn Stadium, which has a capacity of 16,500, and victory would put Spurs in control of a group which also contains FC Sheriff of Moldova and Norwegian side Tromso.

The clash in Ramenskoye will be the first time that the two sides have met in a European competition, but Anzhi did face English opposition last season – exchanging 1-0 home wins with Liverpool in the group stages, before being eliminated by Newcastle United in the last 16. Anzhi began their Group K campaign with a 0-0 draw with Sheriff, Tottenham however topped the group early on with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Tromso. AVB’s boys have won all three of their matches in this season’s competition, scoring 11 times and conceding none in the process.

Anzhi have struggled in their league campaign so far with no wins from 11 matches leaving them second from bottom in the Russian top division, Spurs however have enjoyed a successful start with 4 wins, a draw and loss in their opening six fixtures in the Barclays Premier League.

Injury wise, Anzhi will be missing striker Lacina Traore because of a shoulder injury. He is fundamentally their biggest threat so it will come as a huge bonus for AVB and co. Spurs, meanwhile, could make multiple changes from their draw with Chelsea at the weekend with Brad Friedel and Lewis Holtby likely to return from their Capital One Cup outing at Villa. Jermain Defoe is also expected to line up in attack at the expense of Roberto Soldado. Erik Lamela is also in line to return however AVB confirmed that neither Etienne Capoue nor Aaron Lennon are fit to return from their respective injuries.
