Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic has lost his appeal against his red card received in the 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday. The Serbian will now miss two games, despite a reduced sentence.
The Serbian international will now miss the Capital One Cup final against Tottenham at Wembley this Sunday, leaving Jose Mourinho with a selection dilemma, after losing one of his firm-choice starters.
The FA announced on Monday that they will take no action against Barnes for his challenge that provoked the strong reaction from Matic.
Mourinho confirmed himself on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday last weekend that he could miss the final himself. The Chelsea boss said: “now I’m risking my dugout for the final, because maybe tomorrow I have the risk of being suspended.”
The absence of Matic will definitely come as some relief to Tottenham Hotspur. The hardened centre-midfielder has made 25 of Chelsea’s 26 Premier League games this season, making 37 appearances in all competitions so far.
The Capital One Cup takes place Sunday 1st March at Wembley Stadium. Coverage of the London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham begins at 2:30pm on Sky Sports 1, with kick-off at 4pm.
