Speaking in a Twitter Q&A session using the hashtag #TackleKeown, the Mail pundit answered my question regarding his thoughts on Andros Townsend and Paul Merson’s negative comments on the youngster.
The former Premier League winner said: “well I think Andros Townsend had a big hand in actually securing England’s qualification for the World Cup. In games when we had our backs to the wall, he was magnificent.”
Keown continued to say: “Roy is a loyal manager and rewards players for performances. Sometimes for Tottenham, Andros tries too hard.
“But in an England shirt he looks more relaxed and gets the balance right. Maybe that’s because he feels he doesn’t have to prove anything to Roy.”
Making over 400 appearances for London rivals Arsenal, the hardened defender was quick to spot out a flaw of Townsend’s, stating that he thinks he is too greedy.
Keown said: “at times he can look like he’s playing for himself but with Roy he looks more comfortable.
“I don’t think Andre Villas-Boas really trusted him but it’s a different story with Mauricio Pochettino, who is playing him regularly.”
