Match Preview – Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City

Tottenham have failed to persistently performance against the Blues, with failure at the Etihad becoming a regular occurrence. Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping to take inspiration from Andre Villas-Boas’ Spurs side who famously came back to win 3-1 against City in 2013.

Tottenham have lost seven of the last eight Premier League matches against Manchester City, who have won the three most recent meetings by 6-0, 5-1 and 4-1. In October’s reverse fixture, four penalties were awarded in a Premier League game for only the second time – matching Bradford v Derby in April 2000. Spurs have taken just eight points from their nine matches against the five teams above them going into the weekend’s fixtures.

Tottenham have conceded 49 goals, the highest tally among clubs in the top half of the table. Only Sunderland, Leicester, Burnley, Newcastle and QPR have let in more prior to the weekend. They have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 league games. Spurs are the first team this season to have three players reach double figures for Premier League goals: Harry Kane (20), Christian Eriksen (10) and Nacer Chadli (10). Eriksen has scored an unrivalled seven winning goals in the top division this season.

Opposition Focus

Despite back-to-back wins, they have managed just seven victories in their 15 league matches in 2015. They could lose five successive away league games for the first time since April 2006. City have conceded eight goals in their last four matches. Sergio Aguero has scored nine goals in six Premier League appearances against Spurs, while Edin Dzeko has six in six league games. Aguero has scored four goals in his last three league games after going five without scoring. He has contributed to 27 goals in his 29 league appearances this season, scoring 21 times and providing six assists.

Kyle Walker remains out through a foot injury. Danny Rose is likely to return after missing out through injury in the draw with Southampton. Ben Davies remains out after shoulder surgery in the week. Paulinho is likely to return to the match-day squad after missing out on the trip to St Mary’s due to the birth of his fourth child – the real Royal baby.
