On Saturday, it was announced that Bastian Schweinsteiger had completed a move to Manchester United subject to a medical.
Throughout the summer, Manchester United had alternatively been linked to a move for Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
Louis van Gaal’s side had a £20million bid rejected two weeks ago for Schneiderlin, who is admired strongly by Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Now that the Bayern Munich star has joined the Red Devils, could this open the door for Pochettino to sign his most-wanted man this summer?
It is widely thought that Spurs have been deterred from signing the midfielder, given that the Saints have placed such a large price on his head. Reports over the last year have claimed that Benjamin Stambouli was thought to be Pochettino’s back-up to Schneiderlin. With reports claiming that the Frenchman could be off to Watford this summer (and with Etienne Capoue already out the door), could Schneiderlin fill that void?
Many would speculate that such a deal would be impossible, especially given the controversy surrounding Toby Alderweireld’s move to White Hart Lane, leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of many Saints fans.
But with Manchester United effectively out of the race now to sign the Southampton star, could Daniel Levy work some magic and sign Mauricio Pochettino’s crown jewel?
