Speaking to FourFourTwo about the current Premier League season, van der Vaart told reporters that Bale is not on the same level of those he is often compared to.

“I never thought Bale would end up playing at Madrid,” Van der Vaart remarked.

Joining the North London club in 2010, the former Dutch international played alongside Bale under Harry Redknapp, enjoying great success in the Champions League, reaching the quarter-final stage.

The Ajax graduate has spoken before about his admiration of the Welsh star, although admits he has a long way to go before he reaches the level of the game’s two greats.

Van der Vaart continued: “Bale isn’t like [Cristiano] Ronaldo or [Lionel] Messi; that’s another level.”

Bale’s Wales face Van Der Vaart’s homeland Holland this Friday in an international friendly.

Former Tottenham star discusses future amidst rumours of a Spurs return

Former Tottenham attacker Rafael van der Vaart has suggested that a move to the MLS is in his future.

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City - Premier League

The Dutch international has often been linked with a return to the Premier League, most recently in January with Queens Park Rangers.

Leaving Tottenham in 2012, the midfielder rejoined former club Hamburg, much to the dismay of Spurs fans having spent two memorable years at White Hart Lane.

Despite returning to Germany like a hero, the Dutchman’s three miserable years at the club are soon to come to an end, as the club confirmed they would not renew his contract this summer.

As a result, Van der Vaart will be available on a free transfer, with rumours of a return to North London hotly speculated.

However, van der Vaart has told Dutch media that a move to MLS club Kansas City interests him.

The former Spurs star said: “the interest of Kansas City is concrete, so that’s something to think about.”

Sporting Kansas City CEO Robb Heineman has added weight to a possible move tweeting that he had held “productive discussions” with the Hamburg midfielder.

Sadly for the hopeful Tottenham fans out there, it seems an optimistic return is far from the expected future of van der Vaart. As his ex-wife Sylvie tweeted in 2012 it was simply: “time to go home.”
